I really appreciate those small gestures, they go a long way in my book. He even threw in a complementary plate of fruit at the end of our meal. Our waiter was attentive, friendly, and always right there to refill our waters. And even the maki were legit – fresh tuna and yellowtail with just the right proportion of rice. The Lemon Chicken was tender on the inside with a extra crunchy crust on the outside, and paired with a really nice lemon infused sweet and sour sauce. The Salmon Teriyaki was cooked just right and the sauce wasn't too overpowering. All the meats and seafood in the Happy Family tasted fresh. As for the flavors, aside from the Lo Mein being a bit too salty and oily, everything was on point. All the dishes were cleanly and artfully presented, the maki especially looked gorgeous. I was expecting drab plating and drab flavors. Ended up going with the Lemon Chicken, Beef Lo Mein, Happy Family, Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box, and a couple of rolls of specialty maki. Most of the gripes about this place on Yelp are with the lunch/box specials, so we stayed away from those. There are separate menus for Japanese and Chinese food, and both are pretty overwhelming. Not a far cry from some of the trendier Asian spots in Manhattan. As we were seated, I was impressed with the space – clean, modern, with a chic sushi bar. Mind you, it was 5:30 on a Friday afternoon, but still… Even so, we bit the bullet and decided to give this place a shot. We peeked in… and it was empty, never a good sign. We were walking around the Astoria-Ditmars area looking for an Asian restaurant, when we happened upon Kitaku. Very surprisingly, Kitaku is one of those rare exceptions where quantity doesn't compromise quality.Ĭame here a couple of weeks ago when my family was in town. Typically, the larger the menu, the worse the food. I'm fairly skeptical of places that serve both Japanese and Chinese food.
